The approaches used are integrative taking into account interactions between other organs involved in muscle homeostasis (liver / muscle interactions, intestines / microbiota / muscle, specific needs of certain organs). We also take into account the interactions between the different nutrients (proteins / energy substrates / antioxidants) in qualitative and quantitative terms (vegetable vs animal proteins, speed of digestion, etc.)
Models of integrative physiology and dynamic metabolism studies, such as multicatheterized mini-pork, are used in combination with the use of stable isotopic tracers. Rodent models are also used up to clinical studies for translational research.

Main results:

  • Demonstration of a loss of sensitivity of the muscle protein metabolism to the effect of the meal and in particular to the effect of an amino acid, leucine i.e anabolic resistance.
  • Leucine supplementation can therefore be envisaged for the nutrition of the senior and a diet based on food proteins rich in leucine i.e whey, can represent a simple and effective nutritional strategy. However, controlling energy intake also seems to play an important role in the optimization of this strategy.
  • The presence of low grade-inflammation is indeed responsible for the anabolic resistance, but in a  healthy senior with not pathological signs,  the "C-reactive protein (CRP)" can  only explain a loss of the physical performances and a predisposition to insulin resistance.
  • Sarcopenia can be explained by the inability of older individuals to recover muscle mass lost after a health incidentwhich worsen the anabolic resistance. Whey or hyper-protein diets showed encouraging results in post-traumatic recovery by allowing partial recovery of  muscle mass loss.
