Microvesicles, Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Targeting

Virus and extracellular microvesicles: friends or foes?

Created in 2016, our team is interested in extracellular vesicles, their interactions between the host and the virus, and their role in the dissemination of infectious pathology. The extracellular vesicles (exosomes, microvesicles) are important in cell to cell communication. They are secreted and released into the tissue environment and are found in body fluids. The biological cargo carried by these vesicles are various and varied: proteins, lipids, DNA or small RNA ... that can have a favorable or deleterious effect for the recipient cell. In the context of a viral infection, these vesicles can either help the virus escape the surveillance of the immune system, or instead stimulate the immune response and drain the sentinel cells. In the case of an oncogenic virus, these vesicles can carry oncogenes and promote the development and propagation of tumors. 

Our objectives are:

Moreover, in view of the ever-increasing impact of respiratory infections on animal and human health, the few available in vitro models representing the respiratory epithelia (bronchi, alveolar bronchioles) and the need to limit animal experimentation (3R rules), we are developing :

  • In vitro models for viral infection studies : primary pulmonary cultures (ovine, human, goat, cattle), nerve and muscle culture; Organoids, ex-vivo tissue sections
  • Study of extracellular vesicles (exosomes, microvesicles); isolation, characterization, in vitro functionality tests
  • Study of oncogenesis, migration and deregulation of intracellular signaling pathways
  • Molecular virology, cell biology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry
  • Cell imaging 
  • Biosecurity: biosafety Level 2 and 3 Laboratory (BSL2, BSL3)
