Joint Research Unit 1095 Genetics, Diversity and Ecophysiology of Cereals

Axe I: Management of small grain cereals' collection, at national level: acquisition, regeneration, evaluation, preservation and provision

The Biological Resources Centre (BRC) on small grain cereals of Clermont-Ferrand gathers accessions of major species of agricultural interest

belonging to genus Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley), Secale (rye), X Triticosecale (triticale), Avena (oat), and there wild relatives. Preserved accessions are patrimonial genetic resources (landraces, breeding lines, elite lines and registered cultivars), including about 12 000 bread wheats and relatives species, 3 200 durum wheats and relatives, 6 600 barleys, 1 400 triticales, 1 600 oats, 450 aegilops sp. and 80 ryes.

All these genetic resources constitute a useful genbank as well, for basic, genomic studies and applied breeding approaches. It allows for preservation of the existing diversity. In the same way, these resources are a useful tool for the development of new cultivars by modern breeding methodologies to comply with new targets for food supplies.

In order to improve its working process of collection's management, Small grain cereal team membres were trained in Quality Management System. In 2013, BRC has been recognized by the GIS IBISA (Infrastructure in Biology Health and Agronomy), national authority in charge of this endorsement. Then between 2014 and 2015, activities of collection's management have been developed by the way of process approach under the NF S 96-900 standard specific of Biological Resources Center. This organisation allows to obtain in June 2015 BRC certification under NF S 96-900 standard for these activities of receipt, preparation, propagation, preservation and provision of small grain cereal biological resources.
